Couldn't resist posting a close up of my Christmas tree. If you look closely you will see on the bottom
left, Rosie's ornament and towards the right is Gracie's with a red and white striped scarf on. In the upper right is the Grinch and on very bottom left is a New York City taxi cab in honor of all the crazy cab rides we have taken over the last few years. My ornament of Dr. Who's tardis got cut off...you can just make out the blue top on the very bottom of the photo...

Rosie does polka dots!
My daughter Riva, gave Rosie this outfit complete with hoodie. I think Rosie likes it but is not too sure about having her ears covered. Luckily she got this new outfit just in time for winter. While Buffalo got all the snow, we in Syracuse only got an inch which is bizarre. Rosie does love to play and eat snow!

Please Do Not Ask Santa To Deliver A Puppy!
Your kids have been great this year…growing up and being more responsible…you are thinking that maybe this is a great time to finally get that dog that they have been begging you for.
But please don’t ask Santa to bring your family a dog (or cat or other potential pets that take a lot of attention). First of all, there is Santa already working with elves and reindeer and a billion toys to deliver. How is he going to hold onto your puppy! Seriously, there you are thinking about Christmas morning and now visualizing coming out with a puppy with a huge red bow on and the cute overload is just too much. You are thinking you will now be at the top of the list for “Parent of the Year!”
STOP RIGHT NOW! Now go back and remember past Christmas mornings with wrapping paper and ribbon flying everywhere. Take a minute and think what’s going to happen next…you drop the puppy in the middle of all this…he will most likely piddle on the carpet, wrapping paper, etc. He may grab something, like that new plush animal Santa Claus got your daughter and in two seconds has already taken a sizable chunk out of it. He may even try and nip, bite or bark at everyone. And poor Max has gotten off on the right paw with his new family. If you are anything like my family, then after opening your presents, everyone heads out to go visit all the friends and relatives. And Max is already left home alone in the house! Or family comes to your house. There you are cooking, entertaining and hopefully the kids are playing with Max…but he’s competing with their other “new toys.” And by the way, did you remember to buy some puppy food, water dish, puppy toys, dog collar, leash, etc.?
Now take a moment and think about buying a plush, doggy bed, dog sofa bed or crate pad. You can use that big, red bow and wrap the dog bed and place under the tree and you won’t have to bother Santa Claus either. Put a note inside saying that after the holidays you will take them to an animal shelter and together will pick out the perfect puppy to sleep and nap in that dog bed! They will have something wonderful to look forward too and everyone wins…you still can make that “Parent of the Year” list, the kids help in the decision making and the puppy wins too! When you bring Max home, don’t forget to get a dog crate ahead of time for the ride. You and your kids can now pay full attention to getting him and your family accustomed to Max and meeting his needs.
So waiting until after the holidays will help Max and you adjust to having a new furry friend around the house.. Please don’t let your puppy be the one that goes back to the Animal Shelter after a few weeks because you didn’t make the right decision and plan properly.
Make a list and check it twice…and then fill it AFTER the holidays. Check out our website at www.buydoggybeds.and see all that we have in dog beds, doggy bed sofas, along with our plush crate pads too. (Cat lovers are welcome too!) Let a sleeping dog lie…in comfort! Since Gracie's passing on Friday, September 19th, I have been gathering together some of her
scarfs, the wonderful notes friends have sent to us, her favorite heart and chipmunk chew toys, this last crown and placed them in a favorite basket of mine. I have her ashes in a little china dog that has her dog collar on it and one of her scarfs that says "Pat's walking partner, Gracie" on it. My husband Pat was definitely Gracie's walking partner! Gracie's 15th birthday is this Tuesday. Gracie, my forever Queen!

About 6:15am, Friday, September 19th, Gracie Genevieve Powers, just 19 days shy of what would have been her15th birthday, our beloved Standard Schnauzer passed away. She waited for "Mr. Walk" my husband Pat to bring her the first dog treat of the day. When he went back to check on her again in a few minutes, she had passed. Gracie has been in our lives since October 28, 2000. She quickly took over our lives, becoming the alpha and we were all happy to be in her pack. As my daughter Riva, always said, "Gracie is the glue that holds this family together."

Summer Safety For Your Doggys
It’s finally crazy hot outside. You may love being outside, possibly pool side, but your doggy will suffer if you are not careful.
When outside for any length of time, if possible, try and tie your dog to a large, shady tree. A big bowl of water nearby is a must. Do not leave your dog by his dog house. In the summer the house will only trap the heat. If you and your pet love long walks, then plan to do them early in the morning or late in the evening when the pavement won’t be hot. Asphalt can actually burn your doggy’s paws. Now is the time to check out grassy parks and sidewalks for your time together. You may even be lucky enough to have a specified “dog park” in your neighborhood. More and more communities are establishing these dog safe havens where you can unleash your dog into a large, fenced in area. Your pet gets to socialize with other doggy's and you get to socialize with other humans.
And never, ever leave your fur baby in the car alone. Even with the windows down, the car will quickly become too hot in a matter of ten minutes! It’s not just the temperature but humidity that also harms your pet.
Also be prepared if there is power outage. Without air conditioning and depending how long the power may be out, you and your pet will need a back up plan for staying comfortable. If you live in a area that’s prone to outages, consider buying a generator or at least know where one can easily be rented. At the very least, invest in battery operated desk fans.
One of the best and easiest ways you can make sure that your doggy is staying cool in hot weather is with a outdoor doggy bed pad that has a zipper to allow you to insert a gel pack that you have kept frozen in the freezer. These gel packs are good for some six to eight hours and can be re-frozen over and over. There are also doggy pet beds where you pour water directly into the bed too. This is a great way to avoid heatstroke. Breeds of dogs that have short muzzles are especially prone to this as well as older dogs, dogs with any kind of heart condition and overweight, under exercised pets too.
Check out our Cooler Gel Packs, Cool Bed III and Cool Lounger Pet Beds to keep your “best furry friend” safe and cool all summer to make both of you happy! And check out our collection of plush crate pads that come in a variety of colors too. Remember you may also need a second pad. Keep a pad in the room of your house that doesn’t have the crate in it so your dog can nap comfortably while you take the couch. Check out our website http://www.buydoggybeds.com and see all that we have in dog beds and doggy bed sofas too. Free shipping. Let a sleeping dog (or cat) lie...in comfort! Gracie's Best Vet Check Up
It's been a rough year for my beloved 14 1/2 year old Standard Schnauzer Gracie.
She got a lung infection last year and on top of having been born with a heart murmur,
couldn't get rid of the infection...she has been on 5 medications. This past January,
her vet gave her 6 months left...but my Gracie is still with me...she still follows me around the house, going up and down two flights of stairs...here, there and everywhere...thank you to all the
angels watching over her...

Dog Slobber Could Be the Next Breakthrough in Cancer Treatment!
I am posting this from by wendtworth
Dog Slobber Could Be the Next Breakthrough in Cancer Treatment
Wet kisses from man¹s best friend could soon be showing us more than love.
Researchers have found that the DNA on Fido¹s tongue could be the key to new
treatments for rare cancers in both humans and dogs.
The Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) and the Van Andel
Research Institute (VARI), developed the Canine Hereditary Cancer
Consortium, to understand why people and their pets get sick.
The study used saliva, blood and tumor samples of dogs volunteered by
private pet owners for testing in hopes that by studying canine cancer,
oncologists can determine the cause of human cancers.
³Rare diseases in humans also show up in dogs. By studying the DNA of
canines, we expect to more quickly discover the genomic causes of disease
and more quickly find ways to better treat dogs, and people,² said Dr. Mark
Neff, director of the new TGen-VARI Program for Canine Health and
Performance.
The testing will be animal-safe, and is approved by the American Kennel Club
and Morris Animal Foundation. Funding will be supported by private donors,
and by a $4.3 million dollar federal stimulus grant.
Cancer is the cause of death for nearly 50 percent of all dogs older than
10-years-old.
"We¹re proud to be part of such an innovative approach that fully supports
our mission of providing total lifetime care for pets, and one that will
offer hope to people and dogs who are suffering from these illnesses," said
Phil Francis, executive chairman of PetSmart.

Sheriff Joe To The Rescue!
SHERIFF JOE IS AT IT AGAIN!
Joe Arpaio is the Maricopa, Arizona County Sheriff and luckily he keeps getting elected over and over.
Maricopa County was spending approx. $18 million dollars a year on stray animals, like cats and dogs. Sheriff Joe offered to take the department over, and the County Supervisors said okay.
The animal shelters are now all staffed and operated by prisoners. They feed and care for the strays. Every animal in his care is taken out and walked twice daily. He now has prisoners who are experts in animal nutrition and behavior. They give great classes for anyone who’d like to adopt an animal. He has literally taken stray dogs off the street, given them to the care of prisoners, and had them place in dog shows. The best part? His budget for the entire department is now under $3 million.
Teresa and I adopted a Weimaraner from a Maricopa County shelter two years ago. He was neutered and current on all shots, in great health, and even had a microchip inserted the day we got him. Cost us $78.
The prisoners get the benefit of about $0.28 an hour for working, but most would work for free, just to be out of their cells for the day. Most of his budget is for utilities, building maintenance, etc. He pays the prisoners out of the fees collected for adopted animals.

Only 39 More Days!
In the little town of Canastota, NY where I live, we are lucky enough to have a local ice cream stand. I freely admit that when he closes for the fall, I go into a little bit of a depression. The owner keeps a sign on the front of his lawn and every year he starts a count down to when he opens again. With the crazy cold winter we have been having, just seeing that the countdown has started, lifts my spirits...nevermind the longing for his “moose tracks” ice cream (ice cream being the "good" kind of cold).
And of course, Gracie and Rosie (my doggys) each get a vanilla ice cream in a bowl!

Mush Doggy!
Cold fact for the day... At the Denali National Park in Alaska, there are some 2 million areas of wilderness. No motorized vehicles are allowed there. So in emergencies, Huskies are used in sled teams to be are sent out. A dog team has anywhere from 7 to 10 dogs. These sleds are also used to haul supplies to rangers. Teams may be out in temperatures 45 degrees below zero with blowing snow and could be out all day! Think about that the next time you are snuggling on your couch with a cup of cocoa and your furry friend beside you...

Hot Dogs! The 2013 Top 10 Doggy Breeds
I suppose you can guess which dog breed made number one...it’s been number one for the past 22 years and has done it again this year....yup the Labrador Retriever, now breaking the all time popularity record. The American Kennel Club, founded in 1884, announced the 2013 list. The top ten breeds of 2013 after the Labradors are German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, Beagles, Bulldogs, Yorkshire Terriers, Boxers, Poodles (who previously held the 22 year record), Rottweilers and Dachshunds. No longer on the top ten list are the Shih tzus and the Chihuahas.

Don’t Leave Your Doggy in a Hot Car!
A man visiting the New York State Fair last year, left his Labrador
Retriever in the car. The temperature in the car reached 100
degrees and the dog was left in the car for some four hours.
The dog, Ali was found dead. His owner pleaded guilty to animal cruelty.
Patrick Oneill was given a sentence of 3 years propation. He is now
facing charges of animal cruelty concerning horses that he owns.
Hmmm...maybe someone show leave him in a hot car for awhile...

Gracie just got back from being groomed by "Miss Susan" from Love Your Pet in Oneida, NY
If you look closely you can see the Valentine scarf she gave Gracie...it's got a black background with
red lipstick kisses on it. On the VERY first Valentine I ever shared with Gracie, I gave her my silk
red scarf to wear. Gracie, of course, looked fabulous with it on and thus started my collecting every
color scarf in the world for her to wear. She has a few orange ones to wear when the Syracuse University Orangemen basketball team play...all the major holidays are represented....especially Christmas...she must have about 10 different ones to cover that particular holiday!

Graceland is Going Up For Sale!
When I lost my last freelance graphic design client a few years ago, I needed a new job that I could do with Gracie. So my generous husband, purchased a 100 year old two story house for us to renovate.
Gracie was with me almost every day as “we brought some love” back into this home. The market being what it was/is, we couldn’t just turn around and sell it, so we became landlords. The downstairs tenants moved out 2 weeks ago, so Gracie and I went back to touch it up and get it ready for the next tenants.
Before I installed the blinds in the living room, Gracie use to love sitting there staring out the window, watching the dogs walk their humans along the sidewalk.
This time Rosie got to come. Gracie was not going to show Rosie “the ropes”. So Rosie basically ran around like a mad dog, checking out every corner of the large apartment, while Gracie settled in for a long nap. When we first bought the house, I told Gracie’s breeder about what we were doing and she suggested we call the house “Graceland.” While I love the house, I am hoping that this spring, we can finally put it up for sale and make a profit!
It’s Puppy Bowl Time!
Sunday, February 2nd may mean the Super Bowl to most people, but we puppy dog lovers can’t wait for the Animal Planet's Puppy Bowl. It’s Puppy Bowl X (meaning the 10th time no less, starting at 3 PM EST). And not to be undone, the Hallmark Channel has introduced the Inaugual Kitten Bowl which will also be repeated all afternoon, starting at noon EST. May the cutest furballs win!

Meet Walle, Pet of the Month
Meet Walle! He was chosen as the “Pet of the Month” from www.buydoggybeds.com. He is five years old and an active Miniature Schnauzer living in South Carolina. For Christmas, Santa “cheated” and went to www.buydoggybeds.com and ordered and delivered the plush pet sofa bed that Walle is shown sitting in. When he is not napping in his new sofa, Walle loves to play catch outside and go for walks. Walle’s mom loves that the doggy bed is nicely padded and the cover is removable cover for machine washing. The overstuffed sides and back give Walle a place to rest his head.
The only problem is that Walle has to share his sofa bed with Leah (shown above). Leah, who is almost two years old, has found that the sofa bed is quite comfortable and a great place to sit while playing with her plush animals. Sorry Walle!
Best Dog and Soldier Reunion!
I just had to forward this one along!
I have seen a couple of military returning and their dog just going crazy over seeing them again, but this dog takes the cake. I have never seen one crying like this dog is doing. It is heartbreaking to watch especially when he gets in the chair. Amazing. This should disprove any notion that they do not understand "time" because this dog is expressing how long it has been since he saw his master. Amazing footage. Dog is happy upon return from deployment Every military person who has a dog and has returned from a long deployment knows how true this is.
POSSIBLY THE BEST SOLDIER-DOG REUNION VIDEO EVER

Czech Him Out!
A news article from Prague is about Athos, a 4 year old bomb sniffing German Shepherd.
He was seriously wounded in a attack on a military base. Althos was helping Czech forces in Afghanistan. He was decorated for his bravery in a ceremony where he also received a leather collar. The Czech Defense Minister said that Atlthos is “a soldier’s irreplaceable friend.” And check out my
