College Has Gone To The Dogs!

The University of Northern Colorado, as well as a few other colleges, have developed a pilot program where dorm students are allowed to keep pets under 40 pounds. My first thought was “isn’t that nice” followed quickly by “Yeah, but, that pet will soon be neglected!” Would you allow a dorm student to have a baby living with them?!

I still remember what it was like being a full-time student. Your time is spent getting to classes, studying, projects...and having spending money. You may also be working at a part time job. So who is going to regularly take the dog out for a walk, let alone to do “their business?” When the first bag of dog food runs out, “Max” may be living on a steady diet of pizza and tacos.

When you adopt a pet, it comes with responsibility. You have to make a commitment to keep them healthy and happy. It also means spending time with them. A neglected dog may become stressed and take it out by chewing up any number of things that may be strewn around a dorm room. Does the student even know if there is a reliable, local veterinarian in case of an emergency?

If you really are determined to keep a pet at College, then please make a detailed list of supplies ahead of time. Also consider that not every dorm will have air conditioning either. You should not keep a dog in a room that is too hot! Hopefully, you must at least make sure a fan is working to circulate the air.

It would also be wise to crate train your pet. While you are at class, the pet is crated and thus protected and safe. Always keep a radio on low so your pet doesn’t feel alone. This is still not a substitute for your attention. Most dogs should not be in a crate for more than 5 to 6 hours. They will still need to drink water and “do their business.” Never use the crate for punishment, it must always be their “den.”

Please have a back-up plan in case you do realize that you have made a mistake and need to find a new home quickly for “Max.” You do not want your pet to end up in an animal shelter. (That’s another reason why you always need to be on great terms with your parents).

If you are determined to keep a pet in a dorm room, then check out our collection of plush crate pads that come in a variety of colors at www.buydoggybeds.com and also see all that we have in dog beds and doggy bed sofas too. Free shipping. Let a sleeping dog (or cat) lie...in comfort! Follow us at: buydoggybeds.blogspot.com, twitter.com/buydoggybeds and facebook.com/buydoggybeds.

What Treats Are You Feeding Your Doggy?

I remember when my babies were old enough to no longer need jars of baby food but could start to eat “real” people food. It’s feels the same with my puppy and older dog. You want to make sure that the treat you are giving them is a real treat and not a real threat to their health!

You’ve got to do some research. Just the way people may have allergies or are sensitive to certain foods, the same can be said for your puppy or dog. One of the most important ingredients you need to look out for are any jerky treats that are made from sweet potatoes, chicken, duck or dried fruit. The United States Food and Drug Administration has investigated these kind of treats but cannot identify which ingredient that had made some 3,600 dogs sick and 580 died since 2007! Especially be aware if the package says “Made in China.”

Let’s just be safe and go back to the basics. Carrots, bananas or spread organic peanut butter on pieces of apple, with any seeds removed, are good for your dog as a healthy treat. Pears, also with the seeds taken out, plums, cantaloupe and pineapple are also great. These fruits contain vitamin A, vitamin C, fiber and potassium. Grapefruit and oranges may be given but in moderation as they have natural sugar in them. On occasion (weekly) mix one hard boil egg, or one scrambled egg or brown rice into their dog food as they offer good protein for their skin and coat.

I love bully sticks as a chew treat. When I have to leave my furbabies in their crates for a few hours then I give them one to keep them occupied. They are made from the erectile tissue of bulls. These sticks are high in protein, vitamins and minerals and are great for aggressive chewers. With bully sticks, I know that my dogs are “entertained” while I do my errands and not feeling stressed out and alone. Again, look for sticks that are NOT “Made in China” and remove them when they are chewed down to small pieces to prevent any choking possibility.

NEVER feed your pet chocolate, grapes, raisins, avocados, green tomatoes or anything containing garlic and onions.

And remember, your pet naps and sleeps some fourteen hours a day! So to make sure your doggy also has a great bed to sleep and nap on, look through our collection of plush doggy beds and crate pads that come in a variety of colors at www.buydoggybeds.com. Remember you may also need a second pad. Keep a pad in the room of your house that doesn’t have the crate in it so your dog can nap comfortably while you take the couch. Check out our website at doggy beds and see all that we have in dog beds and doggy bed sofas too. Free shipping. Let a sleeping dog lie...in comfort! Don’t Forget Memory Foam When Looking For A Doggy Bed

Someone recently asked about the lack of thickness in some crate pads. She was looking for one that
was thicker as she has a large dog who sleeps all night in a crate, so she wanted something substantial.

If you find that your pet stays in a crate for quite a few hours, then a dog bed made with orthopedic memory foam will keep your pet (and you) happy. Look for a bed that has medical grade memory foam at least 3 inches thick. It’s just like the memory foam that people have in their mattresses with all the benefits too. If you have an older dog with bone, hip or joint problems, then the memory foam will help them get a good, restful nap or night’s rest. The memory foam can also make overweight dogs comfortable too. Basically, the memory foam works by understanding the weight and shape of your pet and then works to eliminate pressure points, molding to your pet’s size. Memory foam also responds to your dog’s body temperature working to eliminate overheating.

There are also plush, sofa doggy beds that now come with a orthopedic memory foam sleeping surface for when the pet is outside the crate, and still needs a nice, comfortable place for themselves. (And for the owner who wants their couch space back!). Look for ones that come machine washable with thick, overfilled bolsters that your dog will want to rest their head on and also surround your pet in comfort too. This also works for those older, larger dogs who can no longer jump up onto their master’s bed for nighttime sleeping.

If you are not particularly worried about thickness, then you may want to look into a doggy crate pad. Some crate pads come reversible for twice the use. Look for one that features machine wash and dry with baffled stitching and polyfil to prevent shifting and bunching up in the wash. You may want to keep an extra crate pad in the room of your house that doesn’t have the crate in it for when your dog needs a nap. Who wants their furbaby just napping on some old blanket?!

Your pet is one of the family. They are your best friend and companion! So provide them with the
superior comfort of a plush pet bed! Check out our website at doggy beds and see all that we have in Orthopedic Dog Beds including Orthopedic Cozy Cave doggy beds to satisfy your pet’s instinct to burrow. Rosie eats snow for breakfast!

Rosie is probably the only one in Upstate New York that still wants to play in all the snow and
record breaking cold we have had this winter!

Saturday, February 21, 2015

That's Rosie with Leah who is almost three years old. Leah came up from South Carolina in this
crazy cold winter to help celebrate her Great Grandpa's 95th Birthday. Leah spend many moments
chasing Rosie around the house!

Yes that's Rosie with her humans, Pat and Bobbie, playing in the zero degree temperature this
past Valentine's Day February 14th. Pat built an igloo fort but it only lasted a couple of days -- the
snow plow driver buried it after two more snow falls...

February Snow

It's back...we had quite a few weeks of hardly any snow but really cold. Had to shovel a couple
of paths on the back deck so Rosie could even start to play in the snow! Now we have so much that
when you go to shovel it...that's not space to put it...Zem's my local ice cream parlor, luckily started
their count down till they open again...only 56 more days...

Doggy It's Cold Outside!

That's Rosie in 19 degree weather. One would think she would quickly "do her business" and want
to come back inside. But when I asked her...she just sat down in the snow...like "I love it out here, not
coming!" It's been an unusual winter...hardly any snow but many days of really cold and even minus
degree weather...not that Rosie minds...

Katherine Hepburn

Today was the first time since Gracie passed September 19th, 2014 that I had to go back to the vets to
get Rosie some pills (just her regular stuff)...when I got home I always put the invoice in this special folder...so of course it's FILLED with so many of Gracie's vets bills...so in separating Gracie's from Rosie's, I came across the certificate of Gracie's pedigree...come to find out her mother's mother was named Shalimar's Katharine Hepburn...(feel bad they spelled it wrong but maybe they did that on purpose?)

My girl...and one of my all time favorite actresses....How did I never see this or remember?

Bath Time!

Rosie just got out of the bathtub. She's not happy but I was thankful that at least (this time) she
didn't even try and jump out of the tub! The last time I tried to give her a bath, she successfully jumped out THREE times before I could shampoo and cream rinse her...
